When we do fundraising for this event, what would you guys think if we
made one of the rewards for $xx contribution be an invitation to join
us?  (This would imply that we would limit invites to only current
contributors or some such.)

I'm -1 on that, I think it implies that the event is somehow private or closed. I think it is better to present the event as open to all, with developers getting sponsored attendance.
