Hi,
I propose we have two hacking sessions:
The first would be at RedHat in January as proposed by Máirín Duffy. This session would focus on GTK problems and the user-interface. I think the opportunity to have RedHat GTK+ experts help us is too good of an offer to pass up. A specific goal would be to improve the Mac OSX port which is suffering from GTK related canvas redraw issues. I envision this hacking session be small so it would be easy to organize. It would be open to only those who have already dealt with GTK, Mac OSX, interface issues, or have deep knowledge of the Inkscape code base. Candidates to invite include: su_v, LiamW, Johan, JazzyNico, Alex Valenis, and Jon Cruz. We can ask Martin to coordinate event. This can be viewed as a "warm-up" session where we can gain some experience in organizing this type of event.
The second hacking session would be at LGM in April. This would be a larger session, open to all Inkscape developers and covering more issues.
What do you all think?
Tav
Tavmjong,
I do think it's a good idea.
Unfortunately, I doubt su_v will have any interest in attending in person, however, if remote involvement/attendance is possible that would greatly increase likelihood of participation. Unfortunately, it's a no for LiamW as well (I've asked and been told why it's a no).
Cheers, Josh

As long as I get an invite too. :-D

I was thinking about this as a possible solution. We have much to do. The only restriction is going to be people deciding when they can give up solid time for travel and inkscape. I'd certainly do both LGM and the dedicated hackfest, but it's a bit easier being located here.
Martin,

Sounds good to me. However the second date is a little close to be applying lessons learned, so we'd just want to temper expectations a little. Together, though, we'd probably end up with good experience. Certain logistics might have closer to a 6-month lead time... but those are the ones we'll have to discover the 'hard way' anyway. :-)

I am probably not knowledgeable enough about OSX and GTK to be eligible for joining.
Remote attendance / remote contributing would be great. I have a Macbook, so can build and test and code for the intended platform :) Timezones result in me being able to work in the evenings when you are working during the day, so that's great too (especially during weekdays).
cheers, Johan

Sounds like we're all in favor, but we'll want to hold a proper board vote so it's official. For that we'll need a rough dollar amount to budget and a list of whom will be attending.
Tav, you know the drill for writing up a proposal, would you mind drafting one for this?
(We'll need one for the post-LGM hackfest too, once we have the details nailed down, but we can tackle that later.)

Yes, I have begun to draft a proposal. Two key problems: One, identifying who to invite; two list of topics to be addressed.
Who to invite? Invitees should be experienced with either GTK or UX. Here is my list: please suggest others:
su_v: Probably won't attend. LiamW: Currently working on Mac OSX port. Cannot attend. Johan: Willing to help remotely with Mac OSX builds. Jazzy Nico: Has done GTK work. Alex Valenis: Worked on GTK3 port. Krzysztof: Good knowledge of internal Inskcape code and event handling. Jon Cruz: Good knowledge of internal code, Mac OSX development. Bulia: Good knowledge of internal code, working on Inkscape again. Martin: Local coordinator.
As to the second problem, I've started a wiki page for GTK issues:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/GTK%2B_Issues
Tav
Just a quick update before our meeting in less than an hour:
I've emailed a handful of selected developers who have been active in the past year or so and who I think are good candidates for a hacking session at Red Hat (intimate knowledge of our code base and/or worked on GTK issues). I have had a pretty poor response. Only Krzysztof responded, he's interested but may have a conflict with exams.
So here is a current list:
su_v: Probably won't attend. (Hasn't actually said she wouldn't.) LiamW: Currently working on Mac OSX port. Cannot attend. Johan: Willing to help remotely with Mac OSX builds. Jazzy Nico: Has done GTK work. Not responded to email. Alex Valenis: Worked on GTK3 port. Not responded to email. Krzysztof: Good knowledge of internal Inskcape code and event handling. Possibly can attend. Jon Cruz: Good knowledge of internal code, Mac OSX development. Not responded to email. Bulia: Good knowledge of internal code, working on Inkscape again. Not responded to email. Martin: Local coordinator. Can come.
I can probably attend. Can any other board members not listed above attend?
As it stand now we have Martin, Krzysztof, and myself. I do think this is an excellent chance to get some help with GTK issues and to get some UX feedback. I would hate to lose it. We could move it to a later date if that would help with attendance (we may not get as much Red Hat support if it doesn't coincide with their Fedora design group meetup).
As for GTK issues, LiamW had filled in a wiki page for GTK issues. su_v will add things as she finds them:

Sorry, I probably can attend. I have a job interview on Friday, so might have things resolved soon. Basically not knowing what my work situation will be at that time makes things a little uncertain.
I am sorry I have not attended the meetings after the first one. I am working a lot on a video editing project, which means I get zoned-out and forget other things completely.

I'd like to propose a few specific objectives for tomorrow's agenda:
* decide indiegogo or paypal. then itemize some tasks.
* fundraising pitch wordsmithing
* estimate costs
* finalize dates and locale decisions & update wiki.
