Well, to be honest that last bit is just the platonic ideal...
In reality Inkscape doesn't have a well-defined protocol for propagating updates between the "semantic" tree and the AST (it's all pretty much ad-hoc), and we suffer dearly for it. One of those deficiencies I was referring to.
