True. It's only a few days ago that I fixed the constrained snapping for such cases :-). But it only works for straight lines, doesn't it? Extending an arc for example isn't possible yet.

1) it all depends on the snapping settings
2) the user must know or learn the effect of ctrl-alt
3) clicking to extend is easier IMHO than dragging
So there's quite a threshold for using this

Now I think of it, we could provide a preview of the extension/trim effect when hovering above the line. Wouldn't that be cool?
