You've posted a nearly identical message to the gimp-developer mailing list as well. Just for the record, Inkscape already can be built using cmake (from version 0.91 IIRC), and a transition of the version control to git and GitLab (hopefully with some support for GitHub workflows) is currently planned. GIMP already uses git as its VCS and you can set up clones and forks for it on GitHub/etc.
