I am not 100% sure but this kind of code looks VERY strange:

panel->setDesktop(panel->getDesktop());

At least you need to add a comment explaining why this is not an error.

In any case, looks like after two switches of windows, panel's _desktop is NULL, causing all kinds of trouble. Could you please find time to look into this bug?
