I believe build systems all do pretty much the same thing. For any system we could point to at least one or two large projects that use it as proof of its sufficiency. Comprehensibility is an important feature and I believe this is what is driving the search for a new system. But in my opinion the most important feature any build system can have is a group of skilled and energetic people to implement and maintain the necessary configuration for Inkscape.
