At this point, Inkscape denies access to those interface items. Let me know if you cannot reproduce it.

Weird. Reproduced. As long as I then try to draw something that shows up (the single click doesn't show anything on the canvas), everything is active again. What's worse, is that for me, my window manager breaks too. I can't click anywhere off the inkscape canvas.
