I have always wondered if we can do compatibility-wise safe extensions to plain SVG for serious things like aforementioned advanced gradient fill types. It really is a pity that it takes so much time to do standards revisions.
If this used extension attributes and SVG-compliant approximate rendering, just like our shapes, it would be perfectly acceptable. But the author is simply using a new element type which is not SVG and provides no backup rendering. I don't think this will fly.
