Hmm, one thing to consider is that if SuSE and other major distros are now including Inkscape, it may not be accurate to be describing it as alpha software. Regardless of what we may think, users are using it in production environments.
With the "release early / release often" philosophy, the standard proprietary software notions of alpha/beta/official/etc. aren't good fits anyway.
Also, I believe we did refer to the 0.38.1 release as a stability release - the main focus of that release was bug fixing. ;-)
