
Installing the libgtkspell development library did the trick. Thanks! I thought I had it installed.
I am surprised that the configure script didn't report that it wouldn't enable spell checking in the summary at the end.
Is spell checking built into the precompiled versions linked to in the Download page? The 0.42.2 version I have installed from the Fedora extras does not appear to have included it.

Make sure libgtkspell development libraries are installed when you configure inkscape.
