This sounds like a terrific idea for incrementally improving functionality, much like Open Office, Joomla, or Firefox. It's also a leg up for would be developers.

Why make a collected package of extensions, when you could go the whole hog and let people update extensions individually on a special extensions repository page, marking which release it is compatible with?
