Sometimes Inkscape crashes while performing an operation that grabs the X pointer. It displays the crash handler window but the Ok button can't be clicked.
Hmm, this sounds pretty serious, but I wonder if it is not an Inkscape problem but an X issue? You could try adding XUngrabPointer in the crash handler code, but my guess is there's a deeper problem at work.
By chance are you running a binary video driver? Often these will lead to inexplicable lockups like this, and sadly there's not much that can be done at the application level to solve that.
Yes, this is the nvidia driver.
It doesn't freeze the display entirely; it still seems to provide mouse movement events to other windows. I just can't click on anything, not even the "Ok" button.
Would that all consistent with a video driver issue?
Also, what versions of Inkscape have been running when you found this problem? Can you try two different versions (e.g., 0.44.1 and 0.45-pre*) and let us know if you see the same behavior? What version have you seen this on currently?

I think this conversation might lead to the wrong conclusion. I experience exactly the same behavior with raden (open source) driver for a while now. X locks, but I'm able to move mouse over the screen. The only solution I've found so far is to switch to tty and killall inkscape and my kde will start reacting again.
There is no patten for this crash that I'm aware of. Xorg 7.1 and inkscape SVN I'm running here.
