Oh yes, when you have an object already, use that. When you just start doing something from a dialog and have yet to find an object to apply to, SP_DT_DOCUMENT(SP_ACTIVE_DESKTOP) is what you need.
However al this does not apply to the "properties" dialogs which are unable to apply to different objects anyway (i.e. you can't select something different and edit it in the same dialog; you'll need to open a new one). This is one of the reasons why we plan to trash them eventually.
