I would agree with making all objects selectable (excluding locked objects). As for selecting behind objects, we have two easy methods already when using the Selector Tool... 1) Alt+Click (linux window managers should really just switch to Super+Drag to move windows... just saying) 2) Alt+Scrollwheel (which is very nice visually imho, it seems like we should add this visual hint to the Alt+Click method for the duration of Alt being held after the first click).
