It isn't supported currently - I think that it's still on the list - but it is pretty far down the list. I think that the Extensions system is starting to shape up, but it still doesn't have loadable modules; that is definitely the first step.
If you're interested in starting this (i.e. you want it to get done faster) I would have no problem giving you some pointers on where to start. I think that you could do alot of it without stressing the current extensions architecture.
