Hatches can be now exported to pdf [1]. In the pdf document hatch paths are continuous lines, what can be visible with high zoom levels.

When a pdf file is opened in inkscape, hatches are represented by pattern elements. In theory it is possible to recover back hatches.
The information about them could be embedded in pdf, like LibreOffice does. I don't know however if cairo enables it.

Good, Bill's downscaling patch I landed for cairo last week probably did
the trick; thanks for confirming.
