I'd rather wait until we have something we like first (we as in people on the mailing list interested in helping with it) before presenting it for modification/critique by the community. But yes, once we have the basics down, we can look to the community for input.

Wow, it sounds amazing! It will be fun to help with the character development.
I'd like to try and involve forum members in the process, if possible. It may be that they don't want to be involved (some of them), and I may be eternal optimist. But if by "emoji" you mean old fashioned smileys, perhaps they might have some interest.
Should we have these discussions in the LP Inkscape-web account? I guess the mailing list really is the best suited for that kind of discussion.
Do you have some time frame in mind for this? I guess I could just cross post from list to forum. And if anyone is interested, from forum back to list. (Probably the forum and the mailing lists are almost mutually exclusive user bases. But for now, I'll try to bring more together.)
All best, brynn (Happy Thanksgiving! for those in the US)

Nice work. I'll have a go at it soon as well. I can produce high quality 2D animation using synfig. There well be a lot of character development involved in inky beforehand though, so these are great first steps. :) W hen I get around to doing inky's expressions, we will have a nice emoji/sticker set for inky as well. :D

First is like a droplet sitting on some non-porous surface, and the other, well, is obvious. Maybe the 2nd one could morph into the first one -- like the droplet is falling until it hits the surface. And I can see it sort of bouncing - not like bouncing up off of the surface but just....well, I wish I could make an animation. It would take me hours. Maybe I'll try it after I finish my other work.
Anyway, just to share some ideas. I don't expect I could make a very high quality animation.
Hey, maybe we should use SMIL?? Just like we need to show gradient mesh in use around the internet, it seems like SMIL is in the same boat.

Inky is so cute! Or should it be called Inkdrop?
Agreed. I like Martin's version that's like a little animal/cat or something. But maybe that's just me liking cats. ;P I'll do some variations, I'm sure Martin and I could work up some dynamic versions too.
I'd love to see this idea revised, polished and incorporated into the official branding. We should have something like your video coded into an SVG animation and put on the website. I can help with that once I clear out my current plate.
Sure. I'll do some story-boards for the animation over the holiday season. When you're ready, just give me a nudge. :) My initial idea was to have inky be a polymorph that can be cute and cuddly but also a bad-ass when necessary, transforming into the most useful tool for the task at hand. This provides a rich ground for animations, which we could incorporate into our "official" videos.
Inky helps you get the job done. :)
I like "Inky", Could go Inky Inkdrop, for a "bugs bunny" "micky mouse" "[name] [what-it-is]" first-name, last name soft of deal that has worked well in cartoons since the dawn of animation. :)

I also think we have a drop mascot in the CR video.
Daw, thanks for the mention, Jabier! That would be the inkdrop animation I never got around to encorporating in the video. It's here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zx9b7m59xa4yi8g/inkscape_intro_ animation_wip_3.ogv?dl=0
Sound effects to follow once I get time again (future).
I'm not sure this animation qualifies as a "mascot", but I think Martin showed me inky after the fact... so maybe that's two kinda/sorta votes for an inkdrop mascot? :) I mean "freedom machine" is fun... but could represent any FOSS software project (or any computer running Linux or OpenBSD). Inky is kinda uniquely ours, imho. I'm sure variations would be welcome, and I'd sure like to see what the community has to say about it (if I get a vote) :)

Yes, could be. But I think an official mascot, possibly together with more involved branding, should be sought from the entire community. Many awesome artists out there! Maybe a contest?

Dear developers,
The about screen contest for 0.92 is complete and we have our three runner ups for us developers to choose from:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=about-screen-contest/contest-for-0 92+0 /
Each of the three are marked as "Next Round", please email to the mailing list with your choices. Simply put your numbers in order of preference, so 3214 would mean 3 is my first choice, 2 is my second choice etc. You don't have to rank all numbers if you don't want to.
You'll notice that I've chosen 4 items, this is because 1 and 3 are so similar and I wanted to give us a better choice.
Thanks to all our artists and voters, I think this round has been really good.
I actually voted for "Ngarai Sianok" and a lot of people loved "Freedom Machine" (see comments on those items). So I'll be adding a few of these to the website front page when 0.92 is released, to replace the current set of images.
Best Regards, Martin Owens
