Hi chr[], I apologize this is a little off topic here -- I can't speak to your potential participation in the hackfest. Although I'm always happy to see more new developers! Thanks for your contributions to the project, and all your hard work :-)
The Inkscape community currently has a problem with Inkscape's gcode tools creators not being available to provide support. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about it, to help individual users who post in forums. But I have no woodshop, much less CNC. (only some brief woodworking experience in college, while studying Forestry, haha) (many years ago) I can only test if my suggestions will work, by using a simulator!
So we would more than welcome any kind of tutorials you might either already have, or might in the future write. And as well....well, I know most (Inkscape) developers don't participate in forums. But there's a large Inkscape forum community which would certainly welcome any knowledgeable participation around CNC and Inkscape's Gcode Tools extensions!!
(Forums: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=forum, http://www.inkscapeforum.com/index.php, and https://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/smf/index.php) (Two of those are mine, and set up so that members can write and publish tutorials.)
If you know of any existing tutorials for using Inkscape's Gcodetools extensions and CNC, could you share links to them? I'll certainly add them to my collection of links to Inkscape tutorials (https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php). And just knowing about them, I can refer other users to them.
Since you mentioned also working on DXF, I wonder if you have any interest in Inkscape's other cutting features, formats, or exports? Another question we've been getting lately, is with Extensions menu > Export > Plot. It seems to only be configured for serial ports and I don't know how to answer when users ask how to set it up for a usb port.
I apologize again for being slightly off topic, and hope I don't seem too "forward" by throwing all this info to you. But it's a growing problem and you're the first Inkscape user I've met who seems to have advanced knowledge about CNC and related features. Or if you might even know of people or websites which can provide support -- any kind of support info would be helpful.
Thank you very much, brynn

Hello Inkscape Community,
I proposed at the irc board meeting my participation on the hack fest. I introduce myself as a dev and a user whose bug reports usually have a patch ready.
I can do a talk "How we use inkscape to drive our CNC machine" and the gotchas that came up: http://chris.rudorff.com/Plotter/IMG_20170214_165918604.jpg
This is a 1.4x10.5m vacuum desk with pen + laser tool. It cuts panels for sail making. It was build 1985 and survived more than computer system (WannaCry? WannaLaught!): http://chris.rudorff.com/Plotter/IMG_20170127_180750123.jpg
So we hit the 1% zoom limit of inkscape ;)
Beside the bugs I already fixed in inkscape I found more issues: memory leaks and performance eater. Top on my todo is the dxf importer. I hacked it for our needs but this extension can use a rewrite I can do.
My travel is not that far but I can use some funding for staying/hotel/sofa.
So I am looking forward meeting the people behind inkscape ;)
chr[]
