Actually the rect IS selected after these steps. Different tools use different ways to highlight selected objects, but it does not affect their selected status.

5.  press delete button on keyboard [<-]
   

Thanks for the report, fixed. (It was a gotcha from adding the new node deletion algorithm by Aaron.)
