No no no. The second from bottom in Text only converts flowed text to regular text. What was asked for is Path > Object to Path.
The commandline option only applies to PS/EPS commandline export.
Ok, I tried that but not using Inkscape regularly (don't worry, I dont use another vector app :) ), I didn't think to choose the node editor tool afterwards.
You don't need to do this, except to make sure it did indeed convert.
I didn't arrive at that because I didnt get a context menu option for Ungroup (?) so I can drag the letters apart...
Convert to path on text does not make a group. It makes a single complex path. Break Apart will then separate letters, though you need to Combine again those which had holes to restore the holes. (There's an RFE on making this less cumbersome.)
