I think I'll leave the GConf idea for now and work on using GIO instead, because it brings more immediate and apparent benefits (and hopefully doesn't cause as much problems as using GConf would). However, I'm surprised by the amount of problems customized user preferences can cause (including crash on startup). It would be wise to investigate getInt() and getDouble() calls in the code and convert them to getIntLimited() and getDoubleLimited() where possible.
