Thanks Jasper,
Nicolas is better placed than me to talk about the technical integration but of course your idea about calling filter primitives groups is very interesting.
About functionalities, for this first set of examples we have grouped very simple filters made to be integrated to bigger ones and other more complex ones which show what bigger filters can do, like Drawing, Cross engraving and Chromolitho, which bring tons of fine tuning possibilities. A third category is composed of fancy posterizing and drawing filters which allow users to quickly reach expressive effects to introduce for example in web design or illustration.

I think it's fantastic that you're doing something about this! It might not be the most sexy way to go about it, but I think it'll work and give us some excellent new functionality. In the future I think it should be possible to group filter primitives and "call" them in different places, but I'm not sure how that would work (yet).

Hello,
Ivan Louette and I have started to work on new custom predefined filters that should make filters use and creation a bit easier. It's not a full filters UI redesign, but only internal extension system based dialogs that provide easy understandable parameters to the existing predefined filters. Now that we have a
minimal usable test set (25 available filters in Filters>Experimental), we'd like some comments on this project, and more specifically a *formal* approval that we are heading in the right direction.
The project has a Launchpad Blueprint (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/custom-predefined-filters) and
a specification wiki page (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/SpecCustomPredefinedFilters).
We're waiting for your comments before going further.
