It is tragic that some people have apparently found it too hard to edit

be necessary with /any/ system like we're discussing).
Definitely; a large portion of this I think is specific to the current wiki; its styles are very poor and make editing difficult.  It can be improved upon significantly.  (Having to register for another 'nother site was another factor with me.  Unified login for the entire Inkscape community is great gain.)

So why not simply move most of our site over to the wiki? Then we can
reorganize and restyle that, making sure that it becomes easier to
navigate and contribute. That way our site becomes more accessible and
better orgaized, while still getting the advantage of being able to
easily edit it.
That's precisely what I'm proposing.  Very little if any of the content linked to on the front page belongs in a wiki; it should all be in the main part of the site.  But I'll say it again: this does not mean it can't be edited like a wiki!

Keep in mind that Inkscape relies on voluntary contributions. This means
that whatever system we have, it should ideally be an "out-of-the-box"
solution, have a very low barrier to entry and require as little
maintenance as possible, while still allowing for structure and complex
content. (To me this spells wiki, especially since we already have one
ready to go.)
Also as I have said, the approach of putting the wiki more into the main system does not preclude making it easily editable.  I don't believe our current system allows

I think I'm just going to start implementing what I've been suggesting; then you'll be able to see what I mean and assess it more precisely.  At present we're discussing hypothetical cases and new things that haven't been seen and so can't be assessed fairly.
