I agree that there is no reason to make from Inkscape big fat monster :). It be better to make it like in gnumeric or firefox. There is core and pugins. User can select which plugin to install.
So Inkscape have to contain file somethihg like /etc/inkscape.rc or /etc/inkscape.xml where plugin can receive info about paths to inkscape binary, inkscape exstensions, etc.
