Sounds good so far. Getting the bugs found and fixed is quite worth it.
After the rest of your stuff is settled, we can take a bit of time and look at some common tricks that can be used to speed things even more.
BTW, while you were in the middle of all that, did you happen to notice how hard it might be for handles to be dynamic or user-configurable sizes?
