Sephen, if you want to approach it from that angle then one possibility would be do a recursive diff and find out where the trees differ.
If you can approach your problem in a very logical fashion, you might be able to narrow this down to one or two source and configuration files and focus on those.

Hello, Ben It took me about five minutes to figure out that you meant for me to do a recursive diff on, for safety's sake, a fresh copy of Inkscape from CVS and a tarball that I have successfully compiled Inkscape from. If that works, then I will try the same thing with sylpheed-claws...... :)
