Just to explain a little better. There is a group of shapes (letters and a couple lines). So that is the "group" I'm referring to and of course the flat coloring is just a solid color.

Actually I now see this problem myself. Dragging gradient vector ends in Fill&stroke is badly broken. It's very recent, most likely caused by Peter Moulder's recent (last two days) refactoring of the gradient code. I'm pretty sure it worked OK as recently as yesterday.
Peter: Could you please check this out? And please always test your changes even if they look trivial.
Joshua: Still, I don't understand everything in your report. For example you refer to it "reverting to the groups original flat coloring" but I don't see where the group comes from. So please still provide a sample file illustrating all points of your report.
