For arguements sake, I would suggest a script that does a find and replace is more of trick than an SVG supported method that doesn't require any scripting or programming. I called it a trick purely because Inkscape can't create a gradient with a single node. But it's a valid and viable SVG method. And since it's named you can be confident that objects using the same colour with a different name will not be effected.
Having said all that, this is perhaps a discussion for a different topic. And I appreciate what ever effort you can make to bring back named gradients for those who want to use it.
