Another thing...why do we have extensions in the save and open dialog that don't work.
Which one does not work? I see three formats there: compressed SVG, SVG with and without extensions. All three work fine.
Agreed. And why do we default to SVG plus extension namespace on "save as", rather than straight SVG?
Because "straight SVG" is for special occasions only. It loses a lot of Inkscape functionality. In fact, it's more of an export than save. Normally, you want to store your Inkscape documents as SVG with extensions, so this is justifiably the default.
