FWIW, the other two apps I could test Illustrator CS4 and Canvas X behave in this way by default.
Consider this another vote for keeping the old default behavior. The node tool, almost by definition, is for making fine tweaks and adjustments to a path. Therefore, I don't want Inkscape trying to guess what that path should look like. If I tell it to delete a node I expect it to delete the node while making the minimum possible changes to adjacent nodes.
