I can, in fact it's really obvious for me. I wonder if it is a difference in gamma information in the PNG or something?

To clarify: of course I see the difference between the two PNG files that Nico attached. But when I render the circle.svg in Inkscape SVN and Batik 1.5.1 on the same system, they both render the same as in Nico's circle-inkscape.png.
