Of course, what changes can be made safely without disrupting the interface depends on the granularity of the interface required. Maybe you could give us a better idea of what would be needed?
All the GNOME-Office people are using Bonobo right? So if we kept our Bonobo stuff up to date (actually tested it) I think that we'd cover your requirements right? I don't think that we have a problem keeping it up to date as much as we don't really have someone on the team that understands Bonobo right now.
