I just made the name of the default template, default.svg, translatable. This means it will show up in your po files. If you are OK with the current default template, you don't need to do anything. If however you want to make a different default template for your language - for example, translate the name of the default layer or change page size - just "translate" default.svg into, for example, default.de.svg, create the default.de.svg file with your changes and commit it into share/templates.
