Maybe it is a bit too late now, but I also disagree that it is purely geometric. For example, in pencil and ink drawings, dots are often used for shading, as a cleaner alternative to hatching. I used the pencil tool to make these drawings and being able to hold CTRL and tap with a pen on a tablet to shade and give volume to the line-drawing was very useful.
Yeah, a little too late unfortunately.
It may not purely be a geometric function, however, it definitely is primarily so. Honestly though, a simple key press can switch you to the pen/bezier tool to do what you desire and shouldn't be too painful (with another key press to switch you back).
One day when Inkscape can be controlled purely by thought, none of this will be an issue. ;)
