I did not try any of the new "application theme" idea.

By "application theming" I mean looking up the icons we currently pull from icons.svg in the icon theme using e.g. gtk_image_new_from_icon_name() or gtk_icon_theme_load_icon(). The three named icons that are present in the "legacy icons" mapping work, but others don't. This is true at least for the icons that use SPIcon. There may also be some that don't use SPIcon but their own custom mechanism.
