Hey Josh,
Hey Martin,
it was one of a couple proposed to work around the limitations of SVG. Additionally, we've already discussed having an option to disable any such tools for users that don't want to use them.
Yes, and I can see how that could be demanded, but then I'd have to explain to people how I have to reject their poster because it's not printable because it doesn't follow the vector only guidelines. Even though they didn't know it.
I would even go as far to say that it should be off by default.
Even the off switch solution is just a breeder of ignorance and complexity.
For the record, this whole "more gradients" discussion started because Alexandre wanted to make sure we didn't ignore a new contributor to the project. I think that one of the things that has brought us all together here over the years is the open, approachable, and friendly community. So, a key with this whole thing is that we had someone who already wrote something, but, unfortunately we can't accept the patch as-is because it's not SVG friendly.
So really, we just need figure out what guidance and feedback can be given to make it acceptable... and again, the bitmap thing was one of many proposed solutions, and the one Jasper just recently proposed WOULD be scalable. (we'd just need to see it in action) :)
Cheers, Josh
