Hi CR, it makes sense. Let's mature the desktop version first then think of future mobile/tablet versions.

I agree. Let's make Inkscape work properly on Desktop/laptop, fix all our long standing bugs, then think about tablets. The all the vector editors I've tried for tablet are horrible. No one has anywhere close to something usable, and it's mainly trying to use these fat wiggly sausages attached to my palms for precision work. It sucks, and no professional would accept working that way.

Let's not make Inkscape into a tablet toy for hipsters to try once and never use again. It's going to suck. :) let's wait until most tablet makers adopts a precision stylus, then revisit.

How many of you are up for the Inkscape-Gemini idea? I feel that there are some issues that needs to be addressed before this idea comes anywhere near a possibility. There are a few things that does need to be addressed :

The easiest to address in theory, and guess work as I"m no programmer: I think is the calligraphic brush and the pencil tool. Why? These are the tool that doesn't need a major overhaul compared to layer mask/clip management. But, again, I'm guessing here. The pencil tool, calligraphic brush is what mobile users will use if they are going to use Inkscape-Gemini version. They will not use the pen tool that often because it is time consuming. If it were possible to have a option to generate a path based on the total area the pencil results and the calligraphic brushing covers up, then the mobile version of Inkscape will make sense. Less nodes, and cleaner looking results in the outline.

And then, we have the thorny issue of making layer/group + clip/mask. Right now, for one to do a sensible work flow utilizing layer mask/clip. One has to go all the way of planning to use clones, and applying to group using clones just to set up a sensible workspace for artwork with a lot of shapes and clipping. Even then, if I try to do things in Krita style within Inkscape. I cannot avoid the huge issue of not being able to set up a mask layer without it interfering with the main workspace. As attached, there's an example. You kinda have to plan to do this on a much larger project though. The reason I am doing this workflow is that I now have a much greater degree of control over masking and clipping, and considering there isn't a good way to edit masks or clipping.

And finally, the issue with filters, and blur filters are not going to play nicely with tablet performance, but then again Inkscape has terrible performance, and that's a issue that doesn't affect just the Gemini idea. At this point, you can do very complicated works in Inkscape with many clip/mask, but the issue with Inkscape's performance is literally what stops that from being a possibility. The same issue can be found on Krita. You can literally do a beautiful painting of over 250+ layers in Krita with many effects, but it doesn't perform anywhere near as good as Photoshop, and it's a huge waste of time to deal with lags. Even if desktop Inkscape has their performance issue addressed, some works are still going to require a huge amount of processing power that cannot be addressed with tablets.

And then, there's the terrible issue of bugs within Inkscape. I think I just tried setting up a sensible workspace, and it crashed. I'll report that to launchpad. But, I believe it has to do with nodes count.

In conclusion, I do NOT believe Inkscape-Gemini is a possibility unless every of those issues are addressed.

Hi Felipe, thank you for your answer. It cleared things up.

Hi Miguel, I see. I have no idea what the devs would say about this but I think it could be nice to draw some attention to the possibility of extra cash to the project (in the possibility of existing a Inkscape-Gemini version) to help accelerate development of Inkscape in general. If that is feasible I would +1 for this.

It seems they're talking about owning a phone account in order to be able to join certain services.

If that's the case, then I strongly advise against proprietary services such as whatsapp, trello, slack, etc...
And I would not advise using Telegram as well since the chat logs are not publicly indexed (unless someone does the job of setting up a bot specifically for that purpose).

Guys,

I read all the thread but was little bit confused: are we talking here about developing inskcape for mobile platforms (iOS and Android) or even better, for tablets (following more or less what Krita did with Gemini version? https://krita.org/en/download/krita-gemini/), or having a physical device, like a cell phone, to be part of 3rd party services?

Cheers,

https://trello.com/?

I think not but dont find a free SIM provider with this name. Anyway we
need to be sure we can catch the phone number in the future.

Cheers, Jabier.
