Perhaps the best advice is this: Do whatever interests you. Browse the bug list, RFE list, Wiki. Invent something simple, small, and reasonably orthogonal to the rest of the program that would however be helpful or otherwise attractive to you. Start small, but don't do something because it must be done; do it because you want it to be done :)
