While I've been working with the tutorials I've experienced a few chrashes so I've decided to start running with gdb to capture backtraces.
Open tips and tricks tutorial. select everything Ctrl+A click the ungroup button a few times. segfault.
Starting program: /usr/local/bin/inkscape [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] [New Thread -1223995264 (LWP 21644)]
