There is currently lots of <math> stuff that doesn't look right (because the Wiki doesn't seem to support it). I hope that we can simply enable that for our Wiki. And otherwise I'll take care of that later.
I'm not sure if this is relevant to the discussion but since advanced gradients (that are not in SVG) are mentioned it might be worthwhile to take a look at Diffusion Curves http://artis.imag.fr/Publications/2008/OBWBTS08/ It's amazing how complex illustrations can be created with so few objects, they're very artist friendly.
