You guys need to set Adobe straight. All of these years they have been erroneously marketing Illustrator as "graphic design software" when apparently it is really just a ".ai editor"!
Maybe they've changed things up, but my version of AI certainly doesn't let me "save" as PNG. Every file type* listed in the "save as" dialog I can select with a reasonable expectation of reopening and having everything intact, 1:1 to the document I saved**.
* except, ironically SVG. Illustrator's SVGs have been less than reliable for me in the past.
** unless you mess about with the fiddly bits instead of accepting the default settings.
