Yes, automake. Sorry, I forgot to mention that to the list. I update the configure scripts to use the POSIX format. This requires a newer version of automake than 1.7.
Now, the reason that I did this is because I found out that our previous tars were in a works format, gnu. If you don't specify the tar format automake will use the default format for your tar program, which for me was gnu -- I imagine it has been for years. But, the gnu version of tar, while having nice features, is non-standard. So, in point, it seems that going to POSIX is an upgrade, and allows for longer filenames.
