Hi, all,
Here is my poor IMHO, please ignore:
As far as I'm concerned, Inkscape is an SVG editor, and it is becoming one of the best. If that lends itself to DTP, then that is wonderful! If not, then there are other DTP tools. SVG tools, on the other hand, are rare, and it would be a shame to dilute the core functionality of this one. Import and export of EPS are secondary.
Again, that's just my humble opinion. I'll go lurk in the corner again now. ;-)
(Off topic: If someone has a good algorithm to improve the octree pruning for color quantization, please let me know. The set of final colors selected needs some improvement; they are a bit dreary.)

That doesn't need to be the case. I absolutely love Adobe Illustrator, yet I was seeking an alternative for a long time. The biggest difference you have with Inkscape is that it's free software. I can love the functionality and interface and still seek an alternative because it's nothing else but platform dependent, $$$-bound upgrades requiring, patent filled, proprietary package.
On the other hand I agree you should concentrate on designing rather than copying. We seem to have a disagreement on the task-based design approach though. ;)
