This sounds quite reasonable to me. But we'll want the ability to switch there before the freeze so the mechanism can be tested. If possible, I think it would be great to have a configure flag that tells Inkscape to ignore the in-tree 2geom and search the platform.
Agreed. We need to keep pushing the separation to the extent that we reasonably can.
Okay, so let's talk dates. Josh and I threw a few of these around. I think it's reasonable to say that we'd need approximately 2 months before the release.
Oh how my hopes have been shaken since we last talked. As much as it would be nice to get in the next round of distro releases, a goal I still hope we can possibly achieve, my experience in the day and a half since we talked has been very bad. I've discovered numerous new crash bugs in that timeframe (2 of which, when more than one inkscape window is open results in data loss). Another factor here is I believe that Josh (verbalshadow... not me in the 3rd person ;) ) stated that there is still somewhere around 4,600 lines in the codebase that need to be 2geomified... which will almost definitely make numerous more bugs in Inkscape and 2geom come to the surface. Oh, and with him and Johan really being the primary people making this happen, it's not terribly fair to tell them to "hurry up".
As has been talked about in a different discussion, SVN is currently more unstable than it's ever been. I do think some aspects of the next release should be discussed sooner rather than later so everyone can cite concerns and goals. One of my concerns, given how bad things are stability-wise, we're probably going to need to set a goal for bug points that is a bit higher than it's been in the past. This is mainly because so many more bugs have been introduced in this dev cycle (not a complaint, it was bound to happen with how much stuff is being replaced/refactored). The biggest concern I have with that proposition is that we've seen things stagnate in the past during the pre-release bug fixing spree.
Just my .02 in the middle of the night... I should go back to sleep. :)
Cheers, Josh
