While investigating this under suse 9.1, I discovered another rather serious bug. The libsigc++ (version "1.2.5" they claim) has a busted sigcconfig.h that defines all the regular automake stuff ("VERSION", "PACKAGE_NAME", etc). In the _stock_ sigc++ 1.2.5, this whole section is #ifdef'd out. I have no idea what suse packaged, but it isn't 1.2.5.
Compiling with this, g++ throws TONS of warnings, but things don't seem to break, as far as I can tell.
Beyond that, Suse 9.1 seems fine with mkinstalldirs; it just uses "mkdir -p".
Since the error is in the po dirs, I suspect a intltool issue. Continuing to investigate...
