I think it should be ok to remove. I remember when it was added; I think we had visions of it being used in ways that never quite materialized. Ted Gould would be worth pinging on this.
Naw, I never used it. The idea was to have something similar to ODF where it seems that people generally like the idea of keeping everything together in a single file even with multiple sources. I really saw it more as a "man, Java people try to make zip files out of everything!" type feature :-) I'm all for dropping it.
