Current SVN uses cairo exporter to PS and EPS, which automatically converts areas with transparency into bitmaps. Do you think your solution still makes sense as an alternative to that? If so, I would welcome it added to our code, of course as an export option for these formats rather than a standalone command. Of course it should work with both flat and gradient transparency, and preserve appearance in almost all cases, perhaps excepting a few special cases.
