A very brute way to use the existing those would be to generate a kind of preview (the files are empty, without any path [1], so Nautilus or any other file manager can't automatically create an useful thumbnail), drag and drop them into your document and use the gradient/pattern.
I believe this is the same way that GIMP gradient files will behave when they are imported into Inkscape.
Probably a better solution is to detect imports of only defs and display something. Anyone have ideas? I see a little paper clip saying "You've added a gradient" ;)
