Even at SCALE, I had many people come up and ask for a native OSX version so they could start using it and start telling others to use it. This included people in education and even professional consultants to companies where Libre software would be a very good fit.
Perhaps the large number of people wouldn't mind terribly putting some money into a hat and funding some developer time at one of the many excellent coding houses?
Inkscape could do with some more developer time and I'm sure there are developers out there who wouldn't mind getting paid to do it.
